Post Christian & Biblical Beliefs????
I see myself as Christian but that being a Biblical belief? I mean I respect the Bible as a tool to learn from (in parts) but is my belief Biblically based? I guess there are those who would say no, and I am not offended by that. Even though I believe in the love Jesus showed and the spirit of love that he preached, I cannot say that the Bible is the most factual of book (IMO). So I believe it is possible to be Christian but for it not to be described as a Biblical belief.
What do others think about this?

I have always seen Jesus Christ as a Teacher who came to bring the essentials of religion to every man, woman, and child. If we look deep in the essential teachings of the TORAH we find "the love of God" (see Deuteronomy 6:5) as the first and most important commandment; and "the love of your fellow human beings" (Leviticus 19:18) as the second great commandment. According to the author of the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus reaffirmed what was said in the TORAH (see Matthew 22:34-40). Jesus will conclude saying, "Everything in the law and the prophets hangs on these two commandments" (Matthew 22:40).

I think that if you follow Jesus the Christ by complying with those two commandments, you do not need anything else. What else would be needed?

Thanks Hermano. That is the part I feel is critical but as for the Bible, there are many parts of it that is far from loving (IMO). I therefore believe in the spirit of the faith which I see as love, rather than every word written in the book.

Pete, I sincerely believe that every Sacred Book of Mankind (that includes the Bible) has been written by fallible human beings. No Sacred Book is perfect, they are just instruments that help us in the path.

I think your right my friend. Yet, it is amazing how so many hold every word so dear (even the outrageous (IMO) parts).

I must agree with Hermano Luis!! Jesus was one of the greatest teachers of humanity. If you are searching for an excellent guide for being a good person, look no further than the sermon on the mount. The underlying theme is love. Love everybody; perfect in its simplicity.

I can't discount the history in the bible, but reality gets a little stretched in some stories. The Jonah story is a little fishy to me, I'm not biting... Everybody loves a hero and Noah was definitely a hero, but I'm not buying that story either.

Well, keep the good advice and ignore the stuff that doesn't apply to you personally and spiritually. That's my personal motto for dealing with most religions.

Sounds like a good approach. I remained calm waiting for my wife for an hour, whilst sitting in Cardiff today. All the time being shouted at that I should repent by someone with a loud haler.

Pete,

I know you favour silence, but I don't think I could have resisted heckling. At least it would have passed the time.

Fundamentalists have their uses. Years ago I had just started decorating the kids bedroom when two Mormons came to the door.

I said "You can come in if you are any good at scraping wallpaper".

They did a first class job. And their book gave me a good laugh as well.

Someone lent me The Book of Mormon once, the illustrated one.

I couldn't take it seriously as all the angels had a distinct look of Superman!

Cheers, Midori
