Veterans Day is our Armistice Day.

Here it's celebrated on the Monday following Nov. 11th.
As a Bank Holiday.

Federal employees (government workers) and schools are closed.
There is no post delivered.

This is for ALIVE veterans.

In 1919 President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11th a holiday, and it was called 'Armistice Day.'
In 1954 the name was changed to 'Veterans Day'.

It started out as an observance to commemorate the end of WW I. Like yours.
The main intention had been to have a day to reflect on the sacrifices of those who served in the military during World War I, who were still ALIVE.
Often there are parades, like yours.
And local communities do special things for their local Veterans.

Today, the day is meant to honor ALL servicemen and women; and there are local ceremonies and parades that dedicated to honoring ALL live troops for their service.
These often allow veterans to speak about their time in the service and give people the opportunity to personally thank veterans for their sacrifice.

I wish my brother a Happy Veterans Day, but NOT a Happy Memorial Day, since he is still alive!!

Last year, the city of Austin took 5 Veterans (all little old men in their 80s) to Washington DC, for a tour.
They were flown there, and were accompanied by several young women, as their escorts.
The General Manager and the director of Human Resources where I work were among the "girls" who accompanied them.
It must have been tons of fun!
I would have gone, but I get paid hourly, and if I'd gone that would have meant no income!!! =(
