The Selkirk Grace

Some hae meat and canna eat
Some wad eat that want it!
But we hae meat
and we can eat
And sae the lord be thankit

Robert Burns

the Selkirk Grace, the Gaelic version

Ha biadh aig cuid, 's gun aca cail,
Acras aig cuid,'s gun aca biadh,
Ach againne tha biadh is slaint',
Moladh mar sin a bhith don Triath.

Translation

Some have meat and cannot eat
Some would eat but have none!
But we have meat
and we can eat
And so the Lord be thanked

History of the Selkirk Grace

Robert Burns was touring Galloway in 1794 with his friend John Syme. They stayed with the Earl of Selkirk at his family home at St Mary's Isle in Kirkcudbright (pronounced Kir-koo-bree). Burns would entertain the family with his humour, poems, songs and conversation. Before each meal he would give Scottish toasts. One evening he recited an old version of a traditional Scottish grace known as the Galloway Grace or the Covenanter's Grace which he changed to his style of recital and writing. The guests were impressed by this new Scottish toast and Burns published it as the Selkirk Grace in their honour. Since then it has been said by many a Scots family before formal and informal meals.

Some sources state that this took place in the summer of 1793 whilst others state that the Selkirk Grace was written in the Selkirk Arms Hotel in Kirkcudbright which is now owned by the Best Western Hotel group. Who knows?

Here's tae us

O Parvardigar — the Preserver and Protector of all!
You are without Beginning, and without End,
Non-dual, beyond comparison, and none can measure You.
You are without colour, without expression, without form, and without attributes.
You are unlimited and unfathomable, beyond imagination and conception, eternal and imperishable.
You are indivisible; and none can see You, but with Eyes Divine.
You always were, You always are, and You always will be;
You are everywhere, You are in everything; and You are also beyond everywhere and beyond everything.
You are in the firmament and in the depths; You are manifest and unmanifest, on all planes and beyond all planes.
You are in the three worlds, and also beyond the three worlds; You are imperceptible and independent.
You are the Creator, the Lord of Lords, the knower of all minds and hearts; You are omnipotent and omnipresent.
You are Knowledge Infinite, Power Infinite, and Bliss Infinite.
You are the Ocean of Knowledge, all-knowing, infinitely knowing, the Knower of the past, the present, and the future, and You are Knowledge Itself.
You are all-merciful and eternally benevolent; You are the Soul of souls, the One with infinite attributes.
You are the Trinity of Truth, Knowledge, and Bliss,
You are the Source of Truth, the Ocean of Love;
You are the Ancient One, the Highest of the High; You are Prabhu and Parameshwar,
You are the Beyond-God, and the Beyond-Beyond God also,
You are Parabrahma, Allah, Elahi, Yezdan, Ahuramazda, and God the Beloved.
You are named Ezad — the only One worthy of worship.
Amen

The Sailors Prayer.

Oh Lord above
Send down a dove
With beak as sharp as razors

To cut the throats
Of them there blokes
What sells bad beer to sailors.

I was in Hull once.Twice actualy, we had to go back to apologise.

Actualy, the second time was so Paddy could get married to the bird he trapped the first time we were there.
What an amazing run ashore that was.

I do not meet many people who say they have been there but I did see it was ranked no 1 in the worst cities to live in. However, I have many fond memories of Hull and if it was not for work then I guess I never would of left.

I think we were supposed to be stopping off in Liverpool again, but we landed up in Hull because the Navigator got us lost (again).
Actually,we were following someone in the North Sea and we broke down.It was the nearest place we could row to.
