 Atheism
The other day I was watching the TV and a Quaker popped up; but he was no Quaker that I've heard of as he was an Atheist. That confused me a little ( ok that's not a hard thing to do ) Are there many Atheist Quakers?

 Re: Atheism
There are atheist quakers. The society of friends does not ask people to believe anything. There may be Christians in the society but they are by no means exclusive. They welcome everyone. The format of the service is in silence unless someone is moved to speak. For the Christian, they will say that they are moved by the Spirit. For the atheist they are likely to be moved by being inspired. Each is okay. I really do not know anyone on this forum who would not be welcomed at a meeting. However, I am told things are different in some parts of the states. There you may get exclusive Christian meetings in some parts. In the meeting I go to there are atheists, agnostics, universalists, Christians, a sufi, and and others with personal views and we all get on really well.

 Re: Atheism
That's intresting Pete that there is a type of Schism amongst the Quarker just like there seems to be in every religous denomination. I never gave that a though before. Given the opertunity I think I would rather go to your meetings than the others lol

 Re: Atheism
I would welcome you gladly and I am sure I will not be the only one. Quakers are inclusive and accept people have their own understanding of what most of us call the unexplainable. They do not tell people what to believe. I spoke to a friend today who attended the York Yearly meeting of Quakers. He was one of the people who proposed that the meeting accepted Gay/Lesbian marriages. The meeting had a majority of Christian members and yet all 1,500 people voted unanimously to support the right for Gay/Lesbian and called on the government to do likewise. Quakers are a differing breed.

 Re: Atheism
It is sad that there is no Quaker community in Puerto Rico. It is a church that I would gladly visit.

 Re: Atheism
There is a true story of a US Quaker who did just that. He regularly went to disused church and held a meeting on his own. After a while others joined him until there was a thriving meeting.
