Post Was the Buddha and Atheist or a Theist?
Many persons both in the East and in the West believe that Lord Buddha taught Atheism. In truth He did not teach Atheism or Theism. He taught "dukkha" and the "end of dukkha".

Many translate "dukkha" as simply "suffering". Sadly to say there is no word in any of our Western languages that can translate "dukkha".

Dukkha can mean many things; it is suffering, it is also impermanence, and it can mean conditioned self. I recently discovered that many devout followers of Buddhism spend a lifetime understanding the true meaning of "dukkha".

He did teach that believing in God or Gods, or not believing in God or Gods does not eliminate the suffering associated with dukkha. Dukkha is eliminated in the state of Nirvana or Spiritual Enlightenment. The essence of Buddhas teachings are found in the Four Noble Truths which lead to Nirvana.

Lord Buddha never proclaimed that He was a God, and He never asked anyone to abandon his/her beliefs. He asked people to walk their own path and discover their True Nature.

Even though He created an order of monks (bikshus), they were not meant to live in monasteries. They were meant to live in the world teaching people the path of spiritual enlightenment.

Time changed Buddhism; monasteries were and the monks lived in comfort. Temples were also built, and Lord Buddha became a God.

I am sure he would not have agreed with being made out to be a God.
It is odd how all religions change with time but many often refused to recognise the changes they have made.

That is how we would say it in our modern world. You should have been a Buddhist scholar. Buddha was trying to create a new way of living. To be honest, I do not think that He wanted to create a Buddhist philosophy. Today the Buddhist sacred books are many volumes in both the Hinayana (Theravada School) and the Mahayana traditions.

Just before dying, the Buddha told those present that each had to walk their own path. He told them accept the authority of anyone. One famous Buddhist Master said that Buddha solved His problem, now we have to solve ours. But no sooner did Buddha pass into His Parinirvana, His disciples started to copy down His supposed words.

Let me correct myself: I meant to say, "He told them NOT to accept the authority of anyone." (¡Sorry!)

Zen Buddhism took the advice.

Most of us still have to feed the monkey but we should endeavour to cut our own trail. To find the road not taken. Go placidly through the noise and haste but keep a weather eye open for reactionaries. And remember, take time to smell the roses.

As my Aunt used to say;

'Gather ye Roses while Ye May,
Rheumatism May set in any Day!' :wink:

(In my case, it has!) :huh:
