Post Guru Purnima
On Friday July 15, the Hindu world celebrated Guru Purnima. It is a day to remember our spiritual teachers. No matter what our spiritual tradition might be, we all have spiritual teachers.

A spiritual teacher is someone special. He or she could have been the person that inspired us into the spiritual path; or probably it is that person that is always there for us when things just don't go right. Whoever he or she might be, it is someone who holds a special place is our hearts.

I have had many such teachers. My music teachers taught me the beauty of sound. At the university, I had some teachers that taught me the importance of independent search. In my spiritual path I remember one particular elderly woman (she was called Mamima by her grandchildre and everyone who was her friend) who acted as if she was my student. But after her passing I realized that she had been a wonderful spiritual teacher. She taught me that intellectual knowledge is easy to obtain, but to really be kind is a special kind of effort.

On Guru Purnima we remember those great teachers of our religion, but sometimes we forget the little teachers who taught us the simple things of life. Mamima did not teach me meditation, she did not teach me any of the mantras, she did not teach me how to perform a puja (religious ceremony), but she taught me something of great value: she taught me Loving-Kindness. I honor her on Guru Purnima.

Hermano Luis

You honor me Pete! But you have also been a teacher to many.

I just gained from what others have given to me. The many challenges I have had over the years, some tough and some gentle, have made me think beyond what I originally started with.

As my old school motto said "We gratefully recieve so we can gratefully give".

If I have done anything then its always thanks to others and especially people such as yourself.

We teach best what we most need to learn.

I think there is some truth in that or why would a person study a thing that they feel an interest in. If they already have something or feel they already know something then learning the topic seems to grind to a halt.
