Post Enlightenment Is A Human Reality
"Buddha was not a god". With these words Thich Nhat Hanh, the Venerable Buddhist Monk and teacher, begins his book, "The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching" (Parallax Press, 1998). I have read those words many times, but recently I read them a gain and they made an impact in my mind.

Lord Buddha is not a god, He is not a Messiah, He is not an Avatar, He is not some kind of supernatural being who brings to Earth a heavenly doctrine to save mankind. Lord Buddha is a man like the rest of us.

Yet Lord Buddha "discovered" a path that leads mankind to profound levels of understanding. During His lifetime Buddha said that He only taught two things: the reality of suffering, and the path that leads to the extinction of suffering. He claimed that He had reached a state of mind -- Nirvana -- that releases mankind from suffering. He also stated that every person could reach that very blessed state. In other words, I can become a Buddha, I can find Supreme Enlightenment in my life. Spiritual Enlightenment is a human reality not a supernatural reallity.

It is interesting to note that Lord Buddha was not the only spiritual teacher to express this truth. In the Vedic Upanishads we find following:

"In the depths of meditation, sages saw within themselves the Lord of Love, who dwells in the heart of every creature" (Shvetashvatara Upanishad I:3).
If the ancient sages did it, so can we.

Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879-1950), the Sage of Arunachala, used to teach a very simple method of meditation that He claimed would take anyone -- believer or non-believer -- to Spiritual Enlightenment or profound understanding of our True Nature. He used to teach, "Sit in silence and concentrate on the question 'Who am I?' "

A simple path, He would say, that can lead us from Darkness into Light and free us from the Cosmic Ignorance that leads us to great suffering.

We are all Buddhas, we are all great sages. All of us can find Supreme Enlightenment in this lifetime. It is a joyful effort.
