not sure what 5-10p is in american money(i'm guessing about .07-.12 cents).our reusable bags around here cost us between $1-$2.00 dollars.and the stores keep the money.they are quite useful tho,as some citys are starting to charge for plastic.

I often forget to take a bag with me or keep one in the car or don't take enough for the amount of shopping and the jute bags are so useful for keeping tools and junk in I land up buying one nearly every time I shop. Tesco's are on to a winner. What has sometimes puzzled me about American shopping bags, in the movies at least, is that they are paper and don't have handles. That must be very awkward.

only when you try to carry more than 2 and they are very full.walking with them any distance is a bit awkward.if you want the kind with handles, very few stores have them, and then it's mostly clothing shops.

most grocery stores are going to reusable bags.

LOL!
Pete, your last post made me laugh!
Sorry!
Being from Chicago and having rain almost every day, I understand the plight of wet papers in a wet cotton bag! I always ensure to have a bag that is waterproof!
I'd been a teacher for a long time, and could not afford to have my students' papers get wet! And have the ink run!
I'd lose my job!

Now that I am in Austin, Texas, the city of Austin does not provide bags at all.
If you do not bring your own,
you have to put all your stuff in the trolley/shopping cart,
and then directly into the boot/trunk of your car!!

I live in one of the Austin suburbs, and the stores still provide free plastic bags. But they sell the reusable ones.

I've always re-used the plastic bags. Use them as liners for the garbage/rubbish in the small bin in the bathrooms, plus, since I have dogs, I use them to clean up after my dogs.
That way I use bags I already have, rather than having to buy a roll of new bags, for doggie-walking.

Over here our motto is: Reduce / Re-use / Recycle

Since this was brought out, I still forget to take bags into shops and end up paying the charge.
I'm too forgetful. :frust:

LOL!!
Me too.
I often forget, when I go into Austin proper.
Last night I went to the hardware store when I got out of work,
to buy a doggie door to put into my back door.
Bought all the hardware: screws, hinges, etc.
But, had NO bag!
Put everything in my handbag.
Except the doggie door! That was a big box.
For dogs up to 100 lbs.

We had to make sure that the sausage dog, Seymoure, would fit through the hole!
We tried it this morning, he fits!

Phew...would have been frustrating if Seymoure didn't fit.
Bless you...I now keep a lot in my car just in case.
Whether I take them out of my car into the shop is another matter entirely.
