Wales has had it for some time now and I do not see it makes a bit of difference to their use. However, some charities do profit by it. It maybe be better to ban plastic bags and insist all shops sell environmental friendly bags.

True.
The smaller, independent shops do not need to do this, however the larger ones do. To me, 5p isn't a great amount of money so I would pay for new bags, however environmentally, some shops do use paper bags and don't charge for them as they break down quicker.

I have come across some of the small shops that are charging for bags. Do they forward the charge or keep it for themselves I wonder.

As the law does not affect the small shops I expect they keep it. I know WHSmiths give their money to charities. I would love to know what the rest do.

Me too...I bet a lot keep it for themselves.

I used to work at Spar (shop) they charged 5p small crap bag or 10p larger heavy duty bag...I admit I used to give them away FOC. :jesus:

I always used them as my brief case to work. Never believed in buying bags when you have a shopping bag.

Cotton bags are cheap nowadays and are heavy duty, it only makes sense to use these.
