I understand the offspring are automatically muslim and therefore under death threats if they want to be something other.Hence Islam can grow in some societies.

That's now Pete. I meant back in the days of the Roman Empire they were all Christian. Quite a few different sects now. Mostly off shoots of Greek Orthodox with a couple of Gnostic variations and some modern Catholic and Protestant influences. Bearing in mind that Islam is not a unified belief system. There are quite a few schools of thought with no central authority. Currently the Wahabi's have the upper hand but this has not always been the case. During the European 'Dark Ages' it was Islam that protected Greek scientific and mathematical endeavours until the Rennaisance came along. Pity they've slid back to being knuckle scrapers.

Totally agree. I have no fear of any religion but when they get all powerful - well that is a different thing and history appears to support this (imo).

Yes.
When you have a "religion of the state" then it can get complicated.
Over here there is freedom or religion, since the inception of the very first colonies.
If you did not like your church's teaching, you were allowed and still are, to start your own church.

If you did not agree you were not burnt at the stake.
Or imprisoned and tortured.

The Pilgrim fathers left the UK so they could repress others. They would not let them do that in the UK so they left. They also killed Quakers in the US. It is a good job the US did not follow their example.

And Mormons. I think Joe Smith was thrown out of a window.

In the past. And killing others for their religion is something the settlers brought from Europe.
But is not part of the United States, that was all pre-US.
At the very beginning of the colonies.
The constitution protects freedom of religion, and always prohibited a religion of the state, just like it upholds the right to bear arms.

Ah yes! Land of the free and home of the slave. No constitution is worth the paper it is written on. It is why we don't have one. But we do have principles. Which are more of guide lines as it were. To borrow from POTC.
